To get a better idea of what I currently do I primarily will be using Python & R. I heard one of my professors state they had to get a Mac after having a Linux to access our 'Virtual Classroom'.
I know there's workarounds such as WineHQ though that's partially the issue with Windows, and it'd be for general computing rather than programming. My main concern here is the lack of compatibility for many programs. Additionally, my hope is that using a Linux system would inherently increase my understanding of programming fundamentals. I get the best of both worlds, can build and customize your PC, operate under a UNIX-like OS, and it's all for free. Also, I'm most familiar with the OS so I may be doing myself a disservice by limiting my exposure. What I see as particularly troubling is Microsoft's increasing intrusiveness in regards to our data and relentless pushing of their products (looking at you Edge) and constant updates.
Additionally, there are more Windows users than Mac users so you perhaps less cross compatibility issues? Though I suspect in the field of Data Science, the opposite is true. The main benefit I see is the ability to build and customize your PC. The second option is Windows which is what I'm used to. In a nutshell, their products seem to be sacrificing customer experience to allow greater profits (addons). I'm also reluctant to submit to their pricing and business model out of principle (planned obsolescence). My main issue with Apple is the lack of ability to build or customize your own PC. Additionally, it seems to be the consensus among professionals, my professors, and fellow students. I've noticed some subtle complications I had to use a workaround to accommodate that students using a Mac didn't experience. With the little experience I have, it's my understanding programming runs a bit smoother on a Mac since it's UNIX-based. The primary consideration as of now is which operating system, so I'm curious as to the r/datascience community's opinions.
However, at 5 years old, it seems to be running on its last legs and I'm starting to think about my next purchase.
Anyway, my current system is a custom built PC which uses Windows as its OS. Hi there, I'm finishing up my first semester in a Data Science Master program, so my exposure to the field is still somewhat green.
